About

Scentwork sessions give your dog the chance to use their most powerful sense in a structured, rewarding way. Whether your dog is brand new to scentwork or you’re looking to build on existing skills, we’ll focus on clear foundations, confidence and thoughtful progression.

These sessions support your dog to search independently while staying engaged with you as the handler - because scentwork is always a team effort. As skills develop, your role becomes increasingly important, from reading subtle changes in your dog’s behaviour to making handling decisions during more complex searches. Sessions are suitable for handlers of most abilities and fitness levels; scentwork is about observation, communication and timing rather than physical exertion.

You’ll leave with simple exercises to continue at home, along with guidance on how to build your dog’s skills gradually, safely and with enjoyment at the centre of the process.

FAQs

How does scentwork help build confidence?

Scentwork allows dogs to make choices and solve problems independently, which builds confidence through success. Because the dog is working at their own pace, learning feels rewarding rather than pressured. It can also be taken to different environments, which further helps build confidence.

Do I need any previous experience?

No experience is needed. I run beginner and progression scentwork classes, with exercises adapted to suit each dog and handler team. If you’re unsure which session is right for you, just get in touch and I’ll be happy to advise.

What types of dogs are suitable for scentwork?

Almost all dogs can enjoy scentwork, regardless of age, breed or background. Exercises are adapted to suit each individual dog and handler team.

Is scentwork suitable for nervous or reactive dogs?

Yes. Scentwork is often very beneficial for nervous or reactive dogs. I offer one-to-one sessions, and in many workshops dogs are worked one at a time. It’s important to me that sessions are inclusive, and I can usually adapt to suit each dog. If in doubt, please get in touch.

Can dogs work in a muzzle?

Yes. Dogs are very welcome to take part in scentwork while wearing a muzzle, and this is no problem at all. If your dog is required to wear a muzzle under the DDA, you can also book a one-to-one session, where it may be possible for them to work without a muzzle depending on the location. If you’re unsure, please get in touch and I’ll be happy to help.

I have physical limitations - can I still take part?

Yes. Scentwork is suitable for handlers of most abilities and fitness levels. It focuses on observation, communication and timing rather than physical effort.
