About

Trailing is where dogs follow a trail of human scent - a chance for your dog to use their nose and brain in the way they were built to. Think hide and seek or search and rescue, but for fun. And it really is. Trailing should probably come with a warning sign, as it can be addictive. Watching your dog gain confidence as their skills increase - navigating environments from rural to city centre, following their nose, problem solving, working with you - is an incredibly satisfying feeling.

Trailing mixes mantrailing (where dogs find a person at the end of the trail) and tracking (where dogs find items along the trail, without a person at the end). Teaching elements of both gives more flexibility - to adapt to your dog's natural style, build specific skills, accommodate quirks or physical limitations and keep things genuinely enjoyable for both of you.

Almost any dog can trail, regardless of breed, age or background. See FAQs below for more info or get in touch.

FAQs

What is trailiing?

Trailing is a scent-based activity where your dog follows a trail of human scent. It draws on elements of both mantrailing and tracking, giving us the flexibility to adapt to your dog and build a broader set of skills. Sessions can take place anywhere from rural areas, residential areas to city centres.

What's the difference between mantrailing, tracking and trailing?

In all 3 the dog follows a trail of human scent, the difference lies in what the dog finds and when they are rewarded. In mantrailing the dog finds a person at the end of the trail and is rewarded when they do. With tracking, the dog finds items along the ground and is rewarded per item, and there’s no person at the end. Trailing mixes elements of both, which allows us to tailor the activity to suit your dog's natural style and individual needs.

What are the benefits of trailing?

Trailings allows dogs to make choices and solve problems independently, which builds confidence through success. They use their nose and it taps into their natural drive to hunt. It can also be taken to different environments, which further helps build confidence - once a dog is given a job to do, it’s amazing how much more confidently they can navigate situations they previously found hard.

Is it suitable for nervous or reactive dogs?

Generally, yes, although it may be location specific. Some sessions are held at private venues, where it's easier to manage the environment to suit your dog, but the majority of sessions are held in public locations. Trailing itself can be fantastic for giving dogs confidence to navigate different environments, including triggers. Drop me a message and we can discuss which sessions are best suited for you and your dog.

Can dogs work in a muzzle?

Yes, they are very welcome. We'll adapt exercises as needed. If your dog is wearing a muzzle due to human or dog aggression, please get in contact to discuss before booking.

What equipment do I need?

A y-shaped harness, a long line (approx. 8-10 metres - I have one you can borrow), a couple of pocket sized containers and lots of high value treats (pate/wet food etc.).

I have physical limitations - can I still take part?

It depends - generally, as long as you are able to walk your dog and hold it whilst it's wearing a harness, you will be able to take part. We can adjust the activity accordingly, and keep distances shorter if needed. Trails are usually fairly short when starting out and increases to 200-500 meters (they can be longer, but it’s not something we often do). Get in touch if you have any concerns.
